 మే 08 నే ఎందుకు?
మొదటి నోబెల్ శాంతి అవార్డు గ్రహీత, అంతర్జాతీయ రెడ్‌ క్రాస్ కమిటీ (ICRC) వ్యవస్థాపకుడైన స్విట్జర్లాండ్‌ దేశపు జీన్ హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ (Jean Henri Dunant) 1828 మే 08 న జన్మించాడు. 
ఈయన జ్ఞాపకార్థం ఈయన పుట్టినరోజైన మే 08 వతేదీను ప్రపంచ రెడ్ క్రాస్ దినోత్సవంగా జరుపుకుంటున్నారు. 
మొదట్లో ప్రపంచ రెడ్ క్రాస్ దినోత్సవంగా ఉండేది. 1984 లో ప్రపంచ రెడ్ క్రాస్ మరియు రెడ్ క్రెసెంట్ దినోత్సవంగా మారింది.

రెడ్‌ క్రాస్ చరిత్ర:
జీన్ హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ వ్యాపారానికి సంబంధించిన విషయం గురించి నెపోలియన్-3 తో మాట్లాడటానికి ఇటలి దేశంలోని సోల్ఫెరినో (Solferino) నగరానికి వెళ్తాడు. ఆ సమయంలో అక్కడ సోల్ఫెరినో యుద్ధం (Battle of Solferino) జరుగుతుంది. 
ఆ యుద్ధంలో గాయాలపాలయిన వారిని చూసి హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ చలించిపోయాడు. తాను వచ్చిన పనిని పక్కన పెట్టేసి గాయాలపాలయిన వారికి ప్రథమ చికిత్స చేయడం ప్రారంభించాడు. ఇతనికి తోడుగా చాలా మంది ప్రజలు సహాయం చేశారు. 
హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ జెనీవాకు వచ్చిన తర్వాత సోల్ఫెరినో లో జరిగిన సంఘటనల గూర్చి తన అనుభవాలను 'A Memory of Solferino' అనే పుస్తకంలో రాశాడు. ఈ పుస్తకాన్ని హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ సొంతంగా 1862 లో పబ్లిష్ చేశాడు.  
ఈ సంఘటనే హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ లో 1863 న రెడ్‌ క్రాస్ (ICRC) అనే ఒక సంస్థను స్థాపించడానికి ప్రేరణ అయ్యింది. 
1864 లో జెనీవాలో అంతర్జాతీయ సమావేశం నిర్వహించాడు. అప్పుడే రెడ్‌ క్రాస్‌ స్థాపనకు 14 దేశాలు అంగీకారం తెలిపాయి. ఈ సమావేశం ఫలితంగా ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా రెడ్‌ క్రాస్‌ సేవా సంస్థలు ఏర్పాటయ్యాయి.

రెడ్ క్రాస్ చిహ్నం 1864 జెనీవా సదస్సు నుండి ఉపయోగించసాగారు. ఇది స్విట్జర్లాండ్ దేశపు జెండాను పోలివుంటుంది. కాని వ్యతిరేక వర్ణంలో వుంటుంది. ఈ సంస్థ స్థాపకుడైన జీన్ హెన్రీ డ్యూనంట్ స్విస్ దేశానికి చెందినవాడు కావడం మూలంగా రెడ్‌ క్రాస్ చిహ్నంగా స్విస్ దేశపు జెండాను నమూనాగా తీసుకున్నాడు. స్విట్జర్లాండ్ లో అధికారిక మతము క్రైస్తవం కావున, ఆ దేశపు జెండాలో మతపరమైన గుర్తు క్రాస్ ఉంటుంది.

రెడ్ క్రాస్ (Red Cross)

 రెడ్ క్రెసెంట్ (Red Crescent) చిహ్నం:
1876 నుండి 1878 వరకూ జరిగిన రష్యా-టర్కీ యుద్ధం లో ఉస్మానియా సామ్రాజ్యం రెడ్‌ క్రాస్ కు బదులుగా రెడ్‌ క్రెసెంట్ ఉపయోగించింది. క్రాస్ గుర్తు క్రైస్తవమతానికి చెందినదని, దీని ఉపయోగం వలన తమ సైనికుల నైతికబలం దెబ్బతింటుందని టర్కీ ప్రతిపాదించింది. రష్యా ఈ విషయాన్ని సంపూర్ణ గౌరవాన్ని ప్రకటిస్తూ తన అంగీకారాన్ని ప్రకటించింది. 1929 జెనీవాలో జరిగిన సదస్సులో 19వ అధికరణ ప్రకారం రెడ్‌ క్రెసెంట్ ను అధికారికంగా ప్రకటించింది. ముస్లింలు గల అనేక దేశాలలో రానురాను దీని ఉపయోగం సాధారణమయినది.

 ఇండియన్ రెడ్‌క్రాస్ సొసైటీ (IRCS):
  • ఇండియన్ రెడ్‌క్రాస్ సొసైటీ (IRCS- Indian Red Cross Society) 1920 లో ఇండియన్ రెడ్‌క్రాస్ సొసైటీ చట్టం క్రింద స్థాపించబడింది మరియు 1920 పార్లమెంట్ యాక్ట్ XV కింద విలీనం చేయబడింది. ఈ చట్టం చివరిసారిగా 1992 లో సవరించబడింది మరియు 1994 లో నియమాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి.
